Hugo is in prison. He had a big fight with the prince. ‘I’ll get you, De Groot!’ the prince said angrily. ‘You can read books for the rest of your life!’ So there he was, locked up in Castle Loevestein. Luckily, his wife is allowed to live with him and he is allowed to order big trunks full of books. One day, Marie comes up with a very clever plan to let Hugo escape. But how will he get past the guards?

22 March 2021 marks the 400th anniversary of Hugo de Groot’s escape from Castle Loevestein. To celebrate this remarkable feat, over the course of 2021 the achievements of Holland’s greatest juror and legislator are celebrated. For example, he laid the foundations of international law of war and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
